Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels.  We've got a trio of metroidvanias on the docket this week, but before we get to that, John dusts off Rune Factory 4 in an effort to achieve some feeling of progress.

Speaking of progress, Randall's still chipping away at Monster Boy & The Cursed Kingdom and now has Kevin along for the adventure!  John is looking for his next Metroid Prime fix and starts up Journey to the Savage Planet, but it's off to an iffy start.  Kevin gives Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight a second chance, and this time gets sucked right into its mysterious world.

Randall takes us back to the hardwood once again, and this time digs into some of the WNBA modes & features that were added to NBA2K20.

Discussed:

Rune Factory 4  -  00:01:45

Monster Boy & The Cursed Kingdom  -  00:05:23

Journey to the Savage Planet  -  00:15:05

Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight  -  00:22:26

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels.  Randall & Kevin kick things off this week with their first impressions of the new Battletoads game.  From there, we talk about a trifecta of games that were both announced & released during the most recent Nintendo Switch Indie World Showcase:

John journeys into the infinitely-repeating landscapes of Manifold Garden, Kevin scratches the surface of the waters in Spiritfarer, and Randall gives us his thoughts on the wonderfully charming A Short Hike.

Kevin closes things out with New Super Lucky's Tale and places it alongside the 3D platforming greats of the N64 heyday!

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels.  Kevin kicks things off with a quick update on Bad North & Kingdom: Two Crowns—a couple of roguelike strategy games that are incredibly tough to put down!

Randall checks out the new demo for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater: 1+2, and we cannot wait to get out hands on the full release!  John sticks to the extreme sports, and follows things up with Snowboarding: The Next Phase.

Kevin & John are absolutely enamored with A Short Hike, and we try our absolute best to keep it *spoiler free* for Randall's sake.  Kevin closes us out with Lianthus, a top-down, psuedo-3D, adventure game that you absolutely need to check out!

Discussed:

Bad North: Jotunn Edition  -  00:01:14

Kingdom: Two Crowns  -  00:02:13

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels.  We're getting straight to the point this week, and keeping things short and sweet.

Kevin kicks things off with the demo for Akurra, an upcoming Game Boy Color-inspired puzzle adventure.  He wraps up the episode with yet another demo for Emuurom, an upcoming game for the TIC-80 fantasy console.

Before we get to that, John discusses the Picross S trilogy of games on Nintendo Switch, and is on the hunt for the next innovation to the nonogram formula.  And Randall is still chipping away at Monster Boy & The Cursed Kingdom—and he's still raving about it!  We'll be playing this one for a while.

Discussed:

Akurra  -  00:01:39

Monster Boy & The Cursed Kingdom  -  00:08:36

Picross S series  -  00:16:21

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels.  Sony finally throws us a bone on PlayStation Plus with Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, and Randall & Kevin waste no time getting into it!  From one online-multiplayer game to another, John's been getting a daily dose of Dauntless lately, and Kevin joins him on a couple of quests.

Kevin dives into the murky waters of Sea Salt, an incredibly unique action-strategy game that's even tougher to describe in writing than it is in spoken word.  However, there's certainly more than a hint of Pikmin in its DNA—we reminisce about the entire series, in anticipation of Pikmin 3's arrival on Nintendo Switch!

065 - Is Anyone a Real Person in Blaseball?

August 10, 2020

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels.  Last week, John somehow forgot to mention Blaseball, so we kick things off with a deep dive into the nuances of the newly-emerging sport.  Speaking of new, Kevin's playing Carrion, which just released this past week, and is loving the John Carpenter/David Cronenberg vibes.

From one horror-themed game to another, Randall & Kevin are hooked on Demon's Tilt; a massive virtual pinball table that pays homage to the greats of the 16-bit era.  John has a new main in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and he discusses the pros and cons of playing as Min Min from Arms.

Randall wraps things up with Monster Boy & The Cursed Kingdom, which was his resolution game for 2020.  He's into it so far, and will be keeping us apprised as the adventure continues.

Discussed:

064 - The Most ‘Michigan’ You Guys Have Ever Been

August 3, 2020

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels.  We warm up the mics this week with some Nintendo 64 nostalgia to celebrate this 'milestone' episode.  John keeps the Nintendo nostalgia train rolling with Metroid Prime 2: Echoes—needing to get his Samus fix after discussing In Other Waters last week.

Kevin talks about a bunch of games from Matt Hobbs (aka mmatt_ugh), starting off with his entry into this year's GMTK Game Jam, IMP—followed by his entry from last year's jam, CANNON.  Kevin couldn't get enough of the mmatt_ugh-goodness, and plowed through a couple of other platformers from the indie developer:  MELT & show

[*You can play all of Matt Hobbs' games directly in your browser!?!*]

Randall sees the credits roll in Bot Vice, only to unlock an extra-difficult mode that picks up right where the endgame leaves off.  We rarely talk about a game three weeks in a row on the podcast, but this one earns every single second of its airtime.

Discussed:

July 27, 2020

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels.  We've finally got the usual trifecta back together, just in time to get into our most recent online session with Risk of Rain 2.  Before we get into that though, Randall follows up with his thoughts on Bot Vice after Kevin's high praise last week.

The GMTK Game Jam 2020 wrapped up this weekend and Kevin checked out a small sampling of the whopping 5,000+ submissions.  Rotational Shift & Pongeon are a pair of single-screen arcade games; You Are Now Possessed & Pink River earned the #1 & #3 spots, respectively, on the overall charts.

John is exploring an alien ocean and cataloguing his discoveries with In Other Waters; a gorgeous, entirely UI-based, narrative adventure.  Randall wraps things up with a retro deep cut, The Immortal, an NES title none of us were familiar with prior to its recent addition to the Nintendo Switch Online service.

Discussed:

Bot Vice  -  00:01:17

Risk of Rain 2  -  00:08:05

July 20, 2020

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels.  You're stuck with Randall and Kevin again this week.  We kick things off with a quick Animal Crossing correction after a scolding from John in our Discord chat.

Kevin's still poking around on itch.io and stumbles across a couple of gems from developer, rxiSCANLINE is a roguelike run 'n' gun & Shuriken is a Game Boy-inspired mini metroidvania—both developed during game jams.

Randall & Kevin check out Dogurai from HungryBear, another Game Boy-inspired platformer.  This one is of the hack 'n' slash variety, and was also included in the itch.io Bundle for Racial Justice & Equality.

Randall 'smoothly' transitions into The Last of Us: Part II from there.  He's still not entirely gripped by the game's narrative, but there are some new gameplay twists that are keeping him involved, and coming back for more!

Kevin closes things out with a couple of titles from DYA Games that he's been playing on Nintendo Switch.  Super Star Path is an arcade shoot 'em up mixed with a match three puzzler, and Bot Vice is a gallery shooter akin to Wild Guns that, like its inspirations, doesn't shy away from a healthy challenge.

Discussed:

Animal Crossing: New Horizons (*quick correction*)  -  00:00:55

rxi  -  00:04:06

----->  SCANLINE  -  00:04:17

----->  Shuriken  -  00:09:08

061 - What is this, ‘Guess Who?’

061 - What is this, ‘Guess Who?’

July 13, 2020

Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels.  We're a duo once again, with Randall tagging in for John this week.  Kevin wastes no time before correcting his failure to mention BREAKER from Daniel Linssen last week, yet another game included in the itch.io Bundle for Racial Justice & Equality.  Randall literally dips his toes into the latest Animal Crossing: New Horizons update, which introduces swimming into the mix.  He also finally gets into some Risk of Rain 2 after our incessant begging—and a massive new update that has the game running fantastic on Nintendo Switch!

Kevin talks about a few games from Matt Glanville, starting off with a couple of games that just came out on Switch.  Singled Out seems to be 'Guess Who?' in video game form...with a sniper rifle.  Ghost Grab 3000 is an insanely addictive arcade experience (with a grappling hook!?!) that is beyond difficult to put down.  And the same goes for Switch 'N' Shoot, a single-button shmup where 'one more run' never means 'one more run.'  All three games are available for Nintendo Switch and will only set you back $5 each!

Randall's been sinking most of his time into The Last of Us: Part II, which he's been enjoying on the whole, in spite of some hiccups in the story line along the way.  There's no need to worry about *spoilers* either, as Randall primarily highlights his main interest in the series...the gameplay.

Kevin wraps up the episode with a couple of bullet hell shooters form the itch.io bundle that he teased on least week's episode—Task Force Kampas & Risk System.  The former being a single credit, arcade experience, while the latter is a story-driven, 32-bit pixel art extravaganza; each one baking the concept of risk/reward straight into their core.

Discussed:

BREAKER  -  00:01:25

Animal Crossing: New Horizons (update)  -  00:04:02

Risk of Rain 2 (update)  - 00:08:01

Matt Glanville  -  00:14:03

----->  Singled Out  -  00:14:19

----->  Ghost Grab 3000  -  00:15:22

----->  Switch 'N' Shoot  -  00:19:41

The Last of Us: Part II  -  00:23:00

Task Force Kampas  -  00:30:58

Risk System  -  00:34:54
